Waringstown Seconds are into the final of the Ulster Plate after Andrew Mitchell inspired a remarkable win over Woodvale at The Lawn on Sunday.

The villagers appeared to be second favourites as the visitors piled up 265 for six in 40 overs batting first. Allan Rutherford, the former Ireland wicketkeeper, was among the runs for the visitors.

The odds seemed to be stacked against Waringstown but although Aaron Wright and Aaron Kennedy fell relatively early, Mitchell soon tucked into the Woodvale bowling.

The Glenavon footballer, who starred for the first eleven in recent defeats by Merrion and North Down, underlined what a huge future he could have in cricket by slamming an unbeaten 156.

He found a willing ally in Jamie Matthews who played an excellent supporting role with 56 not out.

Incredibly Waringstown won the game in just 30 overs. They will face North Down Seconds in the final.

Waringstown Thirds had a narrow three runs win over Bangor Thirds at Ward Park on Saturday. Robyn McClimond and Callum Adamson were the pick of the bowlers while Andrew Beattie top scored with 50.

This week the Seconds are away to Instonians Seconds while the Thirds are away to Ballymena Thirds.
