Craig and Alfie fire Derriaghy to seven wicket victory

Derriaghy entertained Cliftonville on Saturday in the Ulster Bank league and in a high scoring game came out on top by 7 wickets thanks to superb performances by Craig Lewis and Alfie Aphale.

The visitors chose to bat first and racked up a mammoth 258 for 7 with opener N Cahill (133) leading the way.

All 7 bowlers used by the home side received some hammering with Craig Lewis being the pick taking 3 for 40 of his 10 overs.

The Derriaghy run chase was based around Lewis and Alfie after the early loss of Bailey and Ballantyne.

These two players treated the large crowd to some powerful hitting in a partnership of 178.

Lewis fell 10 short of what would have been a well deserved century, hitting 7 x 6s and three 4s in his 89 ball stay at the crease.

Alfie remained unbeaten on 112 in an innings that lasted 104 balls and included 5 maximums and 8 fours seeing his side to victory with 2 overs to spare.

This win followed hard on the heels of Thursday night’s T20 Shield success over Templepatrick again at Queensway when Derriaghy chased down 138 with 2 balls to spare.

Alfie was again the big hitting star with 80 not out while Andy Kenny carried his bat for 28.

In Templepatrick’s innings Wayne Hughes picked up 3 for 28. They now face Bangor away in the semi final of this competition in 2 weeks.

This Saturday sees the team travel to Templepatrick and then to Carrick for a 12 noon start on Sunday in a rearranged league game. This is quickly followed by a two night game at home to Dundrum on Tuesday/Wednesday June 24/25 with 6pm start.

The Thirds were also in action three times last week recording a 3 wicket mid-week win away to Donaghadee with Travis Moorhead scoring 53 not out followed by an emphatic 133 run win over Academy both in the league.

They then lost narrowly to CIYMS in the cup on Sunday.

Batting first against Academy a total of 186 for 7 was rattled up with Robert Cumins 42, Nathan Cartmill 38, Reece Scott 31 not out and John Close 24 not out being the main contributors.

When the visitors came to bat they quickly crumbled to 53 all out with the ever green Rodney Hughes taking 4 for 11 in 5 overs while Kingsley Beckett picked up 3 for 2 in 5 and S Gilmore a further 2 wickets.

Sunday’s cup game was a much tighter affair with CIYMS Thirds who play in 2 leagues above their opponents coming out on top by 12 runs.

CI made 165 all out with the wickets shared around and then after R Cumings and R Hill put on 50 for the first wicket the innings stuttered.

Most of the remaining batsmen got into double figures but none were able to get that 30 plus score that would probably have seen their side to victory. No less than 6 players were caught as Derriaghy finished on 152 with 2 overs unused.
