Cricket: Birthday boy Williams secures Player of the round accolade

Eglinton’s Oraine Williams is the most recent winner of the Danske Bank Player of the Round award after his semi-final performance against Brigade on Sunday helped the Villagers into the two-innings decider at the end of this month.

The Champagne will help the Jamaican celebrate his 23rd birthday next week but will also mark a real upturn in his fortunes with the bat after a modest start in his new surrounds.

In company with Stuart Thompson he made an unbeaten 81 against Strabane in the league on Saturday before the same two players combined to inflict a heavy cup defeat on Andy Britton’s team the following day.

Williams made 82 not out and then claimed a couple 
of wickets in Brigade’s reply, moving him on to 19 wickets in total for the season so 
far.
