Cricket Club gear up for new campaign

THIS weekend marks the beginning of the local cricket season with Larne Cricket Club fielding three teams in the Northern Cricket Union.

The First XI will again be skippered by Gareth Gaw, with Jonathan King taking on the role of vice-captain in Section 2 of the Ulster Bank Senior League.

With the club’s two promising juniors, Chris Dempsey and Robert McKinley, seeking new challenges at a higher level, and with other senior players no longer involved, it could be a challenging season for the local club.

However, up-and-coming players Timmy Evans, Dean McDonagh, Darren King and Richard Hood will their chance to shine.

The team will also look to experienced players Gareth Alexander, Paul Ramsay and Trevor Dempsey when the campaign begins with a home match against Laurelvale on April 30, before Larne entertain Junior Cup holders Academy on May 14.

With the Ulster Bank Junior leagues having been restructured over the winter, Larne II will compete in Junior League 2. Games have been reduced from 50 to 40 overs, which should see earlier finishes and encourage more players to participate.
