CRICKET: Newbuildings fly the flag with great National Cup display

On Sunday, the two quarter-finals of the National Cup sent Ballyspallen to Laois and Newbuildings on an even longer jaunt as they headed down to Tralee.

On a day of mixed fortunes for the duo, ’Spallen were beaten on DLS while Newbuildings had a huge 208 runs to spare over County Kerry.

Centuries for openers Mark Hanna and Dean Mehaffey helped Newbuildings to a total of 318-8 and after that the home side never threatened.

Three wickets apiece for Peat Salmon and Ross Hunter put a fairly end to proceedings while former Donemana captain Raymond Mitchell claimed 1 for 7 from 3 overs in his first match in nearly a hundred years.

No joy for ’Spallen however as they lost out to Laois after the home team made 271-8 in their 50 overs.

The Roe Valley team were actually level on DLS when the rain came but had by far the worst of conditions on the restart before falling to a 66-run reverse.

While on Saturday in the Long’s SuperValu Championship Burndennett beat Ballyspallen by 47 runs in match reduced to 43 overs per side.

But Bonds Glen encounter against Killyclooney was abandoned.
