CRICKET: Win over Downpatrick eases Templepatrick’s relegation fears

Templepatrick Cricket Club eased their relegation worries last night with a much-needed five wicket win over Downpatrick at The Cloughan.

In a match reduced to just 17 overs per side, Downpatrick batted first and were held to a total of 125 thanks to some good bowling, particularly from Ross Bryans who took three for 23.

In response, Templepatrick skipper Robert Smith led from the front with a fine half-century, and all-rounder Phil Kernaghan saw his side over the line with a vital 27 not-out.

The home side, who have been struggling with the bat this season, knocked off the required runs with two balls to spare to secure four more league points.

Templepatrick remain just above the relegation zone in Ulster Bank League Section 1, but now eight points clear of fellow strugglers Donaghcloney and 16 ahead of Cliftonville, who are almost certain to be playing Section 2 cricket next season.

This Saturday, August 29, Templepatrick Firsts are scheduled to take on Muckamore at The Cloughan.
