Derriaghy continue their run of league wins

The home side made first use of a slightly damp pitch and found run scoring difficult against some tidy if unspectular bowling.

The Cliftonville innings finished on 150 all out having used up all bar 3 of their allotted 50 overs.

The wickets were shared around with Mark Stinson, Curtis Moorhead, Rob Cumings and Craig Lewis getting 2 a piece while Wayne Hughes had 1 for 11.

Derriaghy’s reply began cautiously and remained so throughout. Opener Peter Bell made a very patient 31 not out while Kaushik Aphale (51) and then Lewis with 32 not out increased the scoring rate to see the Queensway men record their 7th win from 9 games and go top of the league.

Derriaghy had been due to play Muckamore on Saturday but the game was postponed following a death in the Muckamore family.

Two days earlier the teams did meet in the semi final of the Lagan Valley Steels T20 competition at Queensway.

Despite hitting 157 for 9 this was not to be enough and the visitors, thanks mainly to 83 not out from Ryan Haire, got home with 6 wickets and 10 balls to spare.

Derriaghy are not back in league action again until 18th July.

Derriaghy Seconds suffered another defeat away at Academy on Saturday.

The home side posted 187 for 8 with Josh Cardosi, Simon Gilmore, Travis Moorhead and Stuart Hegarty each collecting 2 wickets.

After a solid start in their chase for 188 the wickets began to tumble and were eventually all out 31 runs short of victory.

Hegarty hit 35 not out while Ross Bailey contributed 27 and Scott Hughes 21 in their total of 157.

The Third XI meanwhile continue to fly high at the top of Junior League 6 recording their 6th win in 7 outings on Sunday at Queensway.

CSNI were the visitors and must have regretted their decision to ask the home side to bat first when 262 for 3 was posted in their 30 overs. Openers Johnathan Bell (45) and Michael Fell (47) scored runs quickly at the start and then the Cardosi twins took over.

In a 3rd wicket stand in excess of 130 they really upped the scoring rate hitting many boundaries in aggressive fashion with Sam collecting 60 while Josh smashed 89 not out.

The visitors were never likely to get near this total of nearly 9 an over and so it proved particularly when Ryan Stewart, playing his 1st game of the season, found his rhythm.

After conceding 11 runs in his first over he picked up 5 for 7 in his next 20 deliveries to finish with figures of 5 for 18 as CSNI were dismissed for 69.

In midweek Derriaghy made their exit at the semi final stage of the Under 11 Quoile cup when beaten comprehensively at Waringstown.

Despite hitting a respectful 90 for 4 with Matthew Halliday (35 no) and Todd Benson (26) top scoring the home side openers passed the required total with ease.
