Derriaghy exit Challenge Cup at the first stage

Derriaghy made their exit from this year’s Challenge cup at the first stage when going down by 14 runs at home to Academy on Tuesday evening.

After two wash outs this was the final opportunity to get a result - a T20 game.

The visitors batted first and found nearly all 7 bowlers used to be in good form as they struggled to make 104 for 7 with P Bell, W Hughes and Alfie picking up 2 wickets each.

The home side also found runs difficult to get at first and were 9 for 2 in 5 overs. However captain Craig Lewis and Alfie steadied things and were scoring at the required rate seeing 74 on the board with 5 overs remaining.

At this stage New Zealander Mitch Dickenson decided to put his mark on the game removing the dangerous Lewis for 35 (his innings included 3 x 6s) and then Kenny and Cumins in the same over.

Alfie went in the next over for 27 leaving the home side at 84 for 6.

Dickenson then picked up 2 more in his final over to finish with figures of 5 for 21 giving him the man of the match award.

With no lower order resistance Derriaghy were all out for 90.

This unexpected defeat means a free Saturday for the Queensway men but they are back in league action away to Academy on Sunday.
