Derriaghy hail a successful year for youth sides at awards night

Derriaghy Cricket Club held their annual end of season youth awards night recently with Rodney Hughes, the club Youth Co-ordinator, acting is his now usual role as MC for the evening.

Rodney outlined how 2013 had been a very successful year at youth level for the club.

The season reached a climax in late August with exciting league wins for the Under 11 and Under 13 teams.

This was the result of the hard work and commitment of not only the boys but also the in house coaching team.

The club now have three ECB Level tWO coaches within their our own ranks in Jonathan Bell, Wayne Hughes and Scott Hughes with two other recently qualified ECB Level 1 coaches in Stuart Hughes and Dean Ferris.

These guys have joined David Edwards and Matthew Jennings in delivering the youth coaching programme and the coaching team is well supported by Rodney Hughes, David Skelton and Graham Kenny.

This year the club introduced a seven week summer coaching scheme programme fronted by Scott and Wayne with support from overseas coach, Yogesh Takawale.

This event proved to be a tremendous success with great development of both the players and coaches.

The club will now endeavour to expand upon its development plan in the coming months.

Before handing out awards to the various winners Rodney thanked all the parents and family members who had provided their support during the season particularly those who assisted with transport to games.

Mention was also made of the Colts team who progressed to the semi-final of their knock out cup, beating North Down in the quarter final, a game where Peter Bell scored a century.

Another noticeable achievement, that of a hat trick by U 11 player Rory Brown in an U 13 game was also reflected upon.

Awards were then made as follows. At U 11 level – fielder of the year went to Robbie Jamieson – bowler Jamie White – batsman Reece Malone and for Player of the Year there were joint winners in Reece Malone and Rory Brown.

At U13 level the winners were – fielder Conor Monteith – bowler Ben Nelson – batsman Michael Jones with Ben Nelson also picking up the Player of the Year trophy. The U15 Player of the Year went to Nathan Cartmill.
