Derriaghy into second round after easy win

Batting first the home side lasted 46 overs but only managed to reach 154. Despite sending down 24 wides the Queensway bowlers performed reasonably well with Rob Cumins (4 for 37) being the most successful.

The Derriaghy reply was stead with openers Ross Bailey and Adam Jamison putting on 65 at the half way drinks interval. Immediately afterwards Bailey departed for 21and 3 runs later Jamison fell for 33, both to the spin of former Lisburn player Bruce Topping.

Topping went on to finish with four for 51 and claim the MoM award. Despite losing another four wickets Aphale remained firm finishing on 35 not out as the visitors crossed the winning line with 28 balls to spare.

On the Friday evening Derriaghy were well beaten at Carrickfergus in their opening group game in the Lagan Valley Steel T20 competition.

Carrick scored 172 for four and Derriaghy were 96 for nine went the overs ran out.

Meanwhile the Seconds made it two from two when they defeated Lurgan by seven wickets. The County Armagh men were dismissed for just 71 with Reece Malone and Kingsley Beckett each picking up two wickets.

Stephen Cairnduff 31 and Matty Ballentyne 19 were the main contributors.

The highlight of the club’s weekend games came from schoolboy Zalar Khan who hit a superb century for the Fourth XI in their 4 wicket win away to Templepatrick.

The home side made 160 for six with Rodney Hughes 3/27 being the pick of the bowlers.

On Friday evening the Under 15s narrowly lost out to CSNI in a game that went down to the final three balls.

Reece Malone continued his recent run of form hitting 51 before his mandatory retirement and Jack Harte chipped in with 19 before their innings closed on 111.

CSNI timed their reply well, led by A Johnston who also recorded a 50 as they got home with 5 wickets to spare. Zach Benson was the most successful of the bowlers used taking two for 16 while great credit must go to the Derriaghy ground fielding which was top class on the night.

The U15s next game will be against Cregagh in the Graham cup this Friday.

Meanwhile youth cricket continues for boys and girls at the club. Monday evenings from 5.45pm sees sessions for primary schoolpupils then at 6.45pm it’s the turn of the 12-15 year olds.

On Wednesday from 6.30pm to 8pm there is a session for girls only and anyone interested in learning and playing the game is welcome along – no equipment necessary.
