Derriaghy suffer first defeat

Derriaghy suffered their first league defeat of the season on Saturday against Bangor despite a valiant 126 from Indian player Alfie Aphale.

The newly promoted County Down team travelled to Queensway on the back of two defeats to face a home side missing four regulars.

The visitors made first use of a beautiful Queensway pitch and racked up an impressive total of 293 for 5 with Andy Nixon hitting a superb 130 not out in his sides total.

Despite using seven bowlers none of them could collect more than a single wicket.

The under strength Derriaghy team struggled in reply and apart from some solid early resistance from Dean Ferris (18) it was left to professional Alfie to amass the runs and this he did in spectacular fashion. His innings contained 5 x 6s and 16 x 4s but even before he was 8th out with the total on 211 the home side looked to be on their way to defeat. They eventually finished with 217 giving Bangor victory by 76 runs.

This weekend the club are due to play on three consecutive days. Their Irish National Cup rearrangement (now 25 overs a side) is due to be played at Creevedonnell on Friday afternoon followed by the visit of Waringstown on Saturday in the Ulster Bank Challenge Cup at 12 noon.

Sunday sees another home game, this time in the Ulster Shield, with Bond’s Glen from the North West the visitors for a 1pm start.

Last week the Seconds faced a strong Academy side and came out on the wrong side of a 116 run defeat.
