Derriaghy youngsters shine as Fourths earn a fine win over Victoria Thirds

Derriaghy Fourths provided a victory for the club when they played Victoria Thirds in a league game at Fullerton Park on Saturday.

The home team was made up of a mixture of youth and experience with the evergreen David Skelton making a first appearance of the season.

Derriaghy won the toss and elected to bat but didn’t plan on losing the early wickets of Robbie Jamison and Ben Nelson.

Ross Mulholland, along with Rodney Hughes, proceeded to set about repairing the damage. The partnership blossomed from a slow start and the scoreboard began to tick along nicely. The partnership ended when Hughes was run out for 48 but Mulholland went on to record a fine half century before he too departed for 56. A good partnership between John Close and young Rory Brown maintained the momentum before a late flurry of wickets saw the innings close on 154 for 8 in 25 overs.

The Derriaghy bowling attack was spearheaded by Ben Nelson and Andrew Edgar and both created problems for the visiting batsmen with Ben making the early breakthrough and he went on to take a further wicket.

Victoria were all out for 75 runs leaving Derriaghy comfortable winners in the end. This was a fine team performance particularly from the young players.
