Disappointment at cup defeats for Derriaghy

Derriaghy suffered two Cup defeats last week and had a third match abandoned in the Ulster Shield against Bonds Glen on Sunday.

On Friday, an under strength side travelled to the North West to replay their Irish National cup fixture against Creevedonnell.

Having shot out their opponents for 97 some two weeks earlier before rain halted proceedings, the home side again batted first but this time in their allotted 25 overs made an impressive 199.

On a cold wind swept ground this chase proved way beyond the Queensway side’s ability as they were dismissed for 122.

On Saturday at home in the Ulster Bank Senior Challenge cup Premier league leaders Waringstown were the visitors and despite going down by 5 wickets the Queensway lads put up a spirited show.

On another overcast day the visitors had no hesitation in asking Matty Jennings side to bat first.

The ‘Town’ opening attack of former Ireland bowler Eagleson and overseas professional S Khan were very quick and soon Derriaghy were in big trouble at 22 for 4.

However, Alfie Aphale who hit 65 along with Jennings himself put on a 5th wicket stand of nearly 70 before the latter departed for 23.

After this only Kenny Gilliland with 14 got into double figures as they finished on a total of 131 in 42 overs.

The home side knew they had to take early wickets if they were to give themselves a sniff of victory.

Unfortunately this didn’t really happen as 3 of the top 4 players got into their 20s and although Alfie picked up 2 wickets with M Stinson, K Gilliland and Lewis the others the visitors got home with 5 wickets and around 23 overs to spare.

On Sunday it was the Ulster Shield which is a 40 over competition involving clubs from League 1 in the NCU and North West. Bonds Glen were the visitors and they batted first but after just 2 overs the rain set in and no further play was possible.

The match is now replayed this Sunday at Bonds Glen with a 1pm start.

Before that on Saturday Derriaghy travel to Woodvale for an Ulster Bank league 1 game starting at 1pm.

The club’s Second XI are back in action this Saturday after a three week lie off when Carrick are the visitors for an Intermediate cup 1st round tie while the Thirds are due to host Victoria Seconds in the league.
