Double delight for Tigers

Lurgan Tigers U13 team secured the Tom Greenwood Trophy last week after defeating CSNI in the final of the league competition.

CSNI were confident going into the match having won the Banoge Cup and were looking to do the double.

Lurgan batted first and got off to a good start with Callum Gibson and Jack Maxwell adding 45 for the first wicket in 8 overs before Maxwell was bowled for 8. This brought Max Lyttle to the crease and he and Gibson proceeded to put on a partnership of 82. Gibson was particularly strong all round the wicket, punishing any loose balls he received. He hit 11 fours and 1 six in a tremendous innings of 85 and was only out in the last over of the innings, run out. Lyttle finished with a well played 19 not out, which included 3 fours and enabled Lurgan to post a very competitive total of 128 for 2 from their 20 overs. This was a particularly good score given the slowness of the outfield following a couple of heavy showers of rain.

Lurgan knew that if they could bowl a few tight overs at the start of the CSNI innings that the cup could be coming back to Pollock Park and they did just that. Opening bowlers Callum Gibson and Jack Maxwell restricted the CSNI batsmen to just 13 runs in the first 6 overs for the loss of 1 wicket, with Maxwell bowling McGonigle.

Harry Lockhart and Qasam Mohammed then came on to bowl and they created havoc as CSNI slumped from 25 for 1 to 26 for 5 after 11 overs, each bowler picking up 2 wickets, with Mohammed on a hat-trick at one stage. Further wickets by Peter Hutchinson and Jon Woods (also on a hat-trick) continued to keep CSNI on the back foot and despite some late resistance they could only finish on 80 for 8, giving Lurgan a winning margin of 48 runs.

This was a fantastic performance by the Tigers squad of 14 players and was due reward for a season of hard work with plenty of practice.
