Duo lead way in Senior Two

THE race for the Billy Henderson Properties Senior Two title continues to simmer nicely after Bonds Glen and Ardmore took advantage of Creevedonnell's week off to cement their places at the top of the current standings.

The Bee Gees pulled off a stunning win at Burndennett as those two clubs have experienced vastly differing fortunes in the past month. Jimmy Boyle's side had held the North West's last unbeaten record of the season before the wheels came off in the past few weeks.

That said, Burndennett gave themselves every chance at the weekend as a Mark Roulston half century helped them to a very competitive 255. Mark Pollock with 43, Stephen McCay with 36 and Lee Pollock (25) also contributed whilst David Robinson (3 for 45) and William Moore (2 for 11) were the pick of the visitors' bowling. Bonds Glen are earning something of a name for themselves for successfully chasing down big totals however and Gary Hamilton's side was at it again here.

Despite 35 from Roy Robinson up the order the Bee Gees still looked some way short when reduced to 90 for 5 before Johnny Heaslett took matters into his own hands. Heaslett hit 10 fours and a six on his way to an unbeaten 73 and was given excellent support by both Willie Jackson (47) and Leslie Curry (41) as the tail wagged enthusiastically. Philip Kelly and Mark Roulston picked up two wickets each but Bonds Glen still had 3 more intact when they passed their target.

Killyclooney's defeat at Ardmore provided the collapse of the day as the Bleachgreen side claimed two more points in their own promotion push.

Ken Colhoun and Graeme McCarter looked to have set the visitors up for an imposing total when they posted 112 for the first wicket but when those two went, things started to go pear shaped. Mark Gordon and James Colhoun who, like both openers, have been in good touch recently took the score to 153 for 4 but the rest of the card made for some viewing as the next seven batsmen contributed a total of 2 runs between them. Paul Brolly with 4 for 18 and Conor Brolly (4 for 22) were the men responsible for the rout as Ardmore were set 161 to win.

Adrian Murphy seized the opportunity to get some batting practice in; the West Indian hitting 8 fours and 3 sixes on his way to an unbeaten 85 with Ciaran McDermott 25 not out in a 7-wicket win.

Drummond stayed on the tails of the leaders as they recorded a 99-run win over Sion Mills. Skipper Gordon Cooke again led from the front scoring a half century that contained 9 fours and a six and Michael Lynch with 31, Matthew Mills (24) and Stevie Moore (21) all chipped in towards a total of 246.

Sion's reply was dominated by Mark Patterson's 58 and 41 from skipper John Brown but with no-one else reaching double figures the visitors finished some way short. Curtis McElwee with 4 for 36 and Matthew Mills (3 for 41) did best with the ball for Drummond in a convincing win.

The final game of the day saw Ballyspallen emerge with the points in their game against another struggling side, The Nedd.

The hosts could only manage 115 all out in their innings despite a valiant effort from Alex Steele who hit 12 fours in his 63 and 21 from Ryan Magee late on. Graeme Anderson with 4 for 19 did most of the damage although there were two wickets apiece for Johnny Martin, Stephen Kennedy and Ernie Cassidy.

Vinny O'Hara's three wickets for The Nedd were never going to be enough to trouble the visitors and an unbroken partnership between Calum McGregor (35 not out) and Adam Bond (31 not out) saw them over the line with seven wickets to spare.

Next week its Ardmore's turn to sit it out and that will give the rest of the title chasers the chance to stake their claim.

Bonds Glen travel to Ballyspallen who will be no doubt buoyed by Saturday's win however the joint leaders will be disappointed if they fail to collect both points in that one.

Creevedonnell will fancy their chances of keeping the pressure on when they host Sion Mills whilst Drummond make the short trip to Ballykelly to face Creighton Wilson's struggling side. The Nedd of course are more than capable of turning anyone over so Gordon Cooke will have his form team on their guard.

The most difficult game to call is Killyclooney versus Burndennett but with Graeme McCarter likely to be in Gloucester for the rest of the summer that must surely be the perfect opportunity for the visitors to get their season back on track.
