Gaw stars as Larne power past Dunmurry

A month after their last game, Larne Cricket Club’s 1st XI finally took to the field again on Sunday and managed to blow away the cobwebs with a comprehensive 10-wicket win over Dunmurry.

With the Dunmurry ground still unplayable after a month of rain, they agreed to switch the game to Larne and with a weakened side their skipper was delighted to win the toss and bat first.

It was young Zach Weatherhead who got the ball rolling when he removed both openers, one courtesy of a sharp catch by Willy Graham at point. His opening partner Richard Hood also got in on the act with a wicket to leave Dunmurry on 20-3.

Replacing this pair were the captain and vice-captain Gareth Gaw and Jonny Baxter and it was Gaw who ran through the rest of the batting order to finish with figures of 5 for 4.

Graham took another catch and there was a fine stumping by Trevor Dempsey who soon repeated this to give Baxter a wicket as Dunmurry were bundled out for just 38 in the 19th over.

The Larne openers, Baxter and Chris Dempsey, made no mistakes in the chase taking just seven overs to get the 39 required with Dempsey finishing on 19 and Baxter 14.

Larne now have five wins from six outings in the league and will be hoping to extend this run against Clogher on Saturday.
