Waringstown, who have never won the Ulster Cup, beat Coleraine by 86 runs in a repeat of the 2013 final, which the Bannsiders won at The Lawn.

James Hall struck five sixes in a superb 65 from 72 balls and professional Cobus Pienaar made a brisk 44 as the home side got themselves into a strong position batting first.

Almost inevitably it was Greg Thompson who added the finishing flourish to the innings.

The all-rounder made a belligerent 40 as Coleraine’s attack came under the hammer in the closing overs.

Thompson was eventually taken on the deep square leg boundary as the villagers posted 237 for seven.

Coleraine’s reply started solidly enough and Waringstown were badly in need of a wicket when Pienaar finally made the breakthrough as he removed Tim Chopra.

Scott Campbell, the Coleraine captain, was looking dangerous but the introduction of Gary Kidd led to his demise,as he played on attempting a risky cut shot.

Waringstown seemed to be in control but Coleraine launched a fightback through Rishi Chopra and Sri Lanka professional Roshen Silva.

The latter in particular played beautifully and Coleraine got to the comfort of 106 for two and had the platform to launch at Waringstown’s total.

However, Silva (35) took on one risky shot too many, advancing down the pitch to Thompson and miscuing to David Dawson who took a fine catch running in from long-off.

From there Coleraine went downhill fast, Thompson removing brothers David and Gordon Cooke on his way to taking 5-24.

It marked a timely return to form with the ball for Thompson.

Coleraine collapsed from 106 for two to 151 all out.

The villagers now face a tough trip to Wallace Park to play Lisburn in Saturday’s Challenge Cup quarter-final.

Jonathan Bushe is still on holiday but youngster Marcus McClean has done well in his absence.

The match ball sponsor on Saturday is Betty Heyburn.

Waringstown Seconds had a good day on Saturday as they beat North Down Seconds by 10 wickets.

North Down were all out for 84, a modest total which proved no problem as J. Waite top scored on 65 in reply.
