Kwik Cricket success for Millburn and Christie Memorial schools

Millburn Primary School and the Christie Memorial Primary School are the Coleraine Kwik Cricket Champions for 2015.

The festivals were run over two days at Coleraine Cricket Club.

They were a fantastic opportunity for all the boys and girls to show off their skills from the coaching programmes, which were organised by the new Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.

In the boys event Millburn overcame the strong challenge of Portrush Primary School in the final.

With teams also coming from Christie Memorial PS, Irish Society PS, Ballysally and Kilowen, it resulted in over 80 boys taking part in this year’s event, which was fantastic to see.

The Girls Festival once again proved very popular and Christie Memorial where pushed all the way by a very talented team from Millburn Primary School, who took runners up.

Also competing in the girls festival on the day where Killowen PS, Irish Society PS, Castleroe PS.

Stephen McCartney, Community Sports Development Officer, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council was delighted with the popularity of the event this year again with so many school children eager to take part.

“Both events proved how popular the sport of cricket is in primary schools with over 140 children taking part,” said Stephen.

“The Coleraine Kwik Cricket Festival has now been running for 20 years and is as popular as ever.

“Currently the Coleraine Cricket Club First Team have five players that started playing at Kwik Cricket Festivals.

“They are Rishi Chopra, Matthew Smyth, Varun Chopra, Matthew Douglas and Paul Douglas.”

All the children now have the opportunity to join Coleraine Cricket Club’s extremely popular junior coaching programme, which runs every Friday night from 6.30pm-7.30pm and also enrol on Council’s Summer Recreation programme ‘Cricket Coaching course’ with forms now available at Coleraine Leisure Centre.

The competition was organised by Coleraine Cricket Club and Causeway Coast and Glens Council’s Sports Development Unit.

Millburn and Christie will now have the opportunity to represent Coleraine at the National Kwik Cricket finals, which will be held at Stormont Cricket Grounds, Belfast on the 17th June.
