Limavady Grammar in historic semi-final tomorrow

LIMAVADY Grammar School are playing tomorrow (Tuesday) in the Schools Cup cricket competition, hoping to secure their first place in the final of tournament in almost 40 years.

‘The Grammar’ have made their way to the semi following a number of fantastic victories in the highly prestigious cup since their first match against Ballyclare in May.

They will take on Foyle College’s conquerors Grosvenor Grammar School in Belfast tomorrow in the biggest game of school’s cricket so far this year.

In their first game against Ballyclare, Limavady took the spoils, winning by an excellent four wickets. The were then drawn against Wallace High School, whom they duly despatched with a winning margin of 71 runs.

In the quarter finals, the Limavady boys smashed Carrickfergus Grammar School with a score-line of 103-3 versus 100 all-out.

They now play tomorrow for the chance to make history in the semi-final, when they take on hosts Grosvenor Grammar School in Belfast. The Limavady boys will be confident heading into the match, although Grosvenor will undoubtedly be on a high, fresh on the back of their victory over North West team Foyle College.

Mr Stephen Barr, head of P.E. At Limavady Grammar, told the Sentinel that if the Roe Valley lads win tomorrow, they will make history. He said: “We were in the semi-final a few years ago, but the last time we were in the final, to the best of my knowledge, was back in 1974 – where we actually won the Schools Cup.

“We lost in the semi-finals about two years ago, so this is a great achievement in itself having got to the semi-finals for the second time in just a few years.

“The first thing about this group of players is that we have only one senior boy who is leaving the school at the end of term. Jordan Magee, the captain, is the only player we will be losing for next year – the rest are either in lower sixth or fifth year – year 12.

“The great thing about the team is that it is not just the one player scoring all the wickets. We are winning games confortably.”

Hopes are high that the Grammar School boys from Limavady can go all the way in the School’s Cup if they win their hotly anticipated game tomorrow. Expect coverage of the game in the print edition of the Roe Valley Sentinel on Wednesday.
