Local sides through to youth cup final

Lisburn and Derriaghy have made it through to the final of the most prestigious NCU youth competition, the Graham Cup.

The two local sides will face each other today (Friday) in Wallace Park at 3pm, where a big crowd is expected for the 30 over match.

Lisburn swept aside a strong Inst team in the semi-final on Monday night to secure the local derby final.

Put in to bat, Lisburn openers Nathan Doak (63 not out) and Michael Glass (29) raced to 70 without loss in 10 overs.

Nathan was particularly fluent and his innings was one of the best seen at junior level in many years.

Joel Dundas (16 not out) ensured the team finished strongly, setting 138 for 2 in their 20 overs.

Inst were immediately under pressure with Jude Postlethwaite (1 for 13) capturing the prize wicket of NCU star Olly Metcalfe.

Jude Holohan (1 for 9) bowled Inst captain Bradley McNamara and tight bowling from Michael Glass (1 for 15) and Nathan Doak (1 for 10) ensured Inst fell further and further behind the run rate.

Eddy Kyle (2 for 13) mopped up the tail and Inst were all out for 68 giving Lisburn an outstanding 69 run victory over one of the strongest junior teams in Irish cricket.

Unfortunately Nathan will miss the final as he is on holiday but the team will do their best to ensure his wonderful performances are rewarded.

Derriaghy reached the final on a damp evening in Dundrum last week.

Derriaghy captain Jonny Lynch won the toss and batted first. Reece Malone was again the star performer with the bat for the locals hitting a superb 96 in a blistering display of aggressive batting.

He shared in a 100 run partnership for the second wicket with captain Lynch who scored 33 as they closed on 173 for 6.

If Derriaghy thought this was too big a target for Dundrum they were mistaken as openers Campbell and Hutley scored runs freely reaching 150 without loss, leaving 23 required of the final 2 overs.

A quick piece of work by keeper Rory Brown changed the game when he ran Campbell out with 10 balls remaining and bowler Lynch cleaned bowled the new batsman next ball to swing things back Derriaghy’s way.

A tight last over by White was enough to give them victory by 13 runs and see them into the final.
