Lurgan U13s win the Banoge Cup

THE Lurgan Tigers under 13s defeated old rivals Waringstown in the final of the Banoge Cup on Monday night.

Tigers captain Neil Allen won the toss and elected to field first but the Waringstown openers of Morgan Topping and Peter Froggatt made a solid start. They scored 11 runs off the first three overs but a sweetly timed boundary by Froggatt in the fourth over was followed up by a ball that took his off stump. The successful bowler was Callum Gibson.

That brought Jack Carson to the wicket and together with Topping he set about working the ball with great composure. Their partnership yielded 35 runs in seven overs before Carson was trapped LBW by Neil Allen.

Waite was caught by Lewis Lawson off his own bowling for two and when Jack Maxwell bowled Wilson in the next over Waringstown were on 67 for four with just five overs remaining. James Humphreys joined Topping and together they took the total to 84 at the close. Humphreys finished on nine not out but Morgan Topping top scored for Waringstown batting through the innings for a well played 41.

In reply the Tigers opening pair of Jonny Hunter and Callum Gibson got off to a good start scoring 26 runs in the first four overs. They ran well between the wickets and some well placed cover drives from Gibson ensured that the scoreboard kept ticking over at a good rate. The opening partnership was not broken until the 15th over when Hunter was caught off the bowling of Jack Carson but together they taken the score to 72. Another two boundaries from Gibson in the 17th over brought the scores level and it was left to wicketkeeper Scott Wilson to hit the winning run.

During the presentation which followed NCU vice-president Billy Boyd congratulated both teams on reaching the final and the spirit in which they played the game.

Lurgan now represent the Northern Cricket Union in the Ulster Under-13 Championship Final. They will play Bready who are the winners of the Glenshane North West Cricket Union Cup. This match will take place at Pollock Park next week.
