North West cricket legend dies

Marshall was undoubtedly the greatest ever bowler to don the whites at the ’Donnell

Club stalwart Brian Dougherty paid a glowing tribute to Mr Williamson.

“I have often heard of how opposing batsmen simply feared his pace and skill as he begun his run-up with his back foot planted on the hedge at the ground,” he said.

“He progressed his career forming a formidable opening partnership with Roy Torrens at Beechgrove and had many successful seasons with Brigade and the North-West.

“As a founder member of the ’Donnell he always retained a great support and love for the club.

“When he returned to Creevedonnell in the mid-80’s, I always remember him as being a great mentor and support, personally, and to the new generation of players coming through at the time.

“Without his input then, the club would undoubtedly have folded.

“After retirement he continued to split his time between Beechgrove and the ’Donnell, helping us with the wicket and offering his knowledge and support.

“In his latter years I loved bumping into him, be it at Beechgrove or at Creevedonnell.

“He was never negative about the club, and seemed to know more about our performance the previous game than we did ourselves!

“He would talk about the performances of certain players, of the team, always finishing with - ‘You should have won that game.’

“We always felt encouraged after a chat with Marshall, even though we knew at times he was exaggerating our worth.

“We send our sincere condolences to Lee and the family circle at this time.”

The funeral will take place tomorrow leaving the family home at 23a Curryfree Road via Desertone Road for service at Glendermott Church of Ireland, Church Brae at 2pm. The Burial will take pace at Ballyoan Cemetry.
