Rain halts two of Derriaghy’s three matches last weekend

The rain that hit most of the country last Saturday afternoon affected two of the three games involving Derriaghy.

Only the Second XI managed to get their game away to Templepatrick finished. In a tight game they lost out by 18 runs with Dean Ferris top scoring with 57 in their total of 138. Earlier the hosts were restricted to 156 all out with Stuart McAllister picking up 4 and Simon Gilmore 3 wickets.

The First XI at home to Templepatrick were sitting in the strong position of 131 for 3 in 16 overs chasing 149 in 20 overs, under the revised Duckworth Lewis calculations, when the third heavy shower of the day ceased proceedings.

The First XI complete their league programme this weekend with home games against Holywood on Saturday (11.30 start) and on Sunday (12 noon) against Templepatrick in their rearranged T20 game.

The 3rd XI suffered similar fete as the 1st with their game against Donaghadee being washed out mid afternoon.

Derriaghy CC held their end of season Youth awards evening recently with various trophies being handed out to the U11 and U15 age groups.

Pride of place on the evening went to the U13 squad who won their league and retained the Queensway Shield.

Youth convenor Rodney Hughes once again did an excellent job in presiding over affairs paying special tribute to all the various coaches, managers and helpers who volunteer their time.

He also thanked Indian professional coach Kaushik Aphale, or Alfie as he is widely known throughout the club, for all his time spent working with the many young players at the club and also with the development of the club’s other qualified coaches.

Club President Graham Kenny was singled out for dedicating many hours of support to the club and in particular his time in assisting with transporting coaches to the many schools they coach at during the summer term. With David Skelton he carries out many other tasks involving the club’s youth set up.

Both players and parents voiced their thanks for the time and great enthusiam they contribute in maintaining a solid structure at the club.

Rodney also recived a warm round of applause for his dedication to the youth set up and for his professional handling of the awards evening.

Along with Player of the Year awards for U11, 13 and 15 there were also cups presented for best fielder, bowler and batsman with the following collecting trophies from Alfie.
