Rainy weather wreaks havoc on Derriaghy’s fixtures

The rainy weather again played havoc with the Derriaghy fixture list over the past week.

Despite sending four sides out on Saturday only the Third XI managed to get a game completed as the Firsts at Dundrum, Seconds at home to Cregagh and the Fourths at Muckamore were abandoned. Unfortunately, the Thirds came up against a strong North Down side and were bowled out for 65, losing by 9 wickets.

All teams will be hoping for an improvement in the weather this weekend when the First XI travel to play Downpatrick. The Seconds are at home to Cooke/Collegians on Saturday and away to Saintfield on Sunday while the Thirds are in cup action at Fullerton Park against CSNI IV.

Three of the club’s youth sides did get games completed in mid week and all recorded victories. On Tuesday the Under 13 team travelled to Ards for a league game and came away with an 18 run win. In the absence of regular captain Ben Nelson, Paddy Hunter took over the reins and his side made first use of what proved to be a lively wicket. Openers Michael Jones and Ben Craig both departed in similar fashion, caught off the glove by balls that lifted. The Cardosi brothers, Sam and Josh, departed next followed by the hard hitting David Stewart, before a good partnership between Paddy Hunter and Conor Monteith steadied things somewhat. After Paddy was out, Conor took control of the rest of the innings and finished undefeated on 36. He found the perfect foil in young Rory Brown who showed great technique and a sound cricket mind as he cleverly rotated the strike to his partner with some quick singles. They saw the innings through to a decent total of 113 for 7 in 20 overs.

The bowling attack was spearheaded by Josh Cardosi and Paddy Hunter and they made early inroads. Thereafter, Sam Cardosi came into the attack and along with leg spinner, Michael Wilson, they applied more pressure on the Ards batting line-up. Lewis Curry who on this occasion was not required to bowl also continues to impress. A late flourish from the Ards captain took their total to 95 for 6 in their 20 overs. Young Jamie White bowled the last over and should have had a wicket from his very first ball at this level but unfortunately the chance was spilled. It was a good win for the local team and the boys continue to work hard in practise.

On Thursday in an Under 11 league game Donaghcloney were the visitors to Queensway. Batting first the home side openers Reece Malone and Robbie Jamison both scored freely before falling in consecutive overs. This brought Rory Brown and Jamie White together and they soon began running well between the wickets and punishing anything loose. They added over 50 runs before White was run out near the end for a superb 29 and Brown finished on 19 as Derriaghy closed on 89 for 3.

Donaghcloney made a spirited reply with 10 year old Mike Daly hitting an impressive 44 no but consistent bowling by all 6 bowlers restricted Cloney to 75 for 4 thus giving the home side victory by 15 runs.

Meanwhile the Colts XI progressed to the 2nd round of their cup competition after a 4 wicket win away to Muckamore. Chasing 115 the visitors were indebted to a fine 62 no from Peter Bell to see them through to face Templepatrick next week.

Derriaghy will be introducing their first ever summer academy beginning on July 1 and will run each Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings until mid-August. Anyone interested in joining the Academy should come along any morning.
