Seconds into quarter finals

Lisburn CC 2nd XI progressed through to the quarter final of the NCU Junior Cup with a resounding 9 wicket victory against Instonians CC 2nd XI.

Lisburn CC lost the toss and, with the track looking good, it was no surprise when Inst decided to bat first.

Opening the bowling was Richard Booth and Jonny Ritchie. Booth was particulary misery and his spell of 1-21 in 6 overs was just reward.

His wicket was assisted by a superlative catch by Glenn Halliday at first slip, M Warke the unfortunate victim.

Aaron Kernohan and Matt Lightbody then began to up the scoring rate and had added 40 runs before Derek Suffern lured Kernohan into a false shot with Neil Doak taking the catch in the covers.

Lightbody continued to score a brisk rate and had reached 49 before Suffern got reward for his accuracy by getting him LBW.

Neil Doak, Carl Williams and Michael Turkington afforded skipper Ricky Finlay the luxury of having a quartet of spin / slow options and the they certainly didn’t let the team down.

Doak bowled beautifully and took 4-8 in 7 overs while Turkington took 2-16 in 4. Turkington was assisted by Derek Suffern who took 2 great catches in the deep. The Inst innings closed with the score on 104.

In reply, the Lisburn batsmen were in no mood to hang about and Michael Turkington (50*) and Glenn Halliday (48* - again showing his class at this level) scored at a brisk rate and the total was passed in only 18 overs.

Turkington showed superb timing through his innings and rounded off the match with a huge 6 over long off.

So a great win and a well deserved victory for the lads. The next round is the quarter final clash with North Down II on the 25th June. With no league fixture this Saturday the next match is away vs Coleraine IIs in the O’Neills Ulster Plate on Sunday 5th June.
