Senior Cup leads to quiet day in Division Two

THERE were only three games involving second division sides on Saturday as the preliminary round of the Northern Bank senior cup took centre stage.

After their poor start to the league season things got no better for Creevedonnell as they travelled to Burndennett and took their leave of the competition in no uncertain terms.

Batting first the home team posted an imposing 242 all out courtesy of a marvelous knock from Stephen McCay. The former skipper blasted 9 fours and 9 sixes before being bowled by Richard Philson just four runs short of his century.

Mark Pollock chipped in with 35 while Andrew Clarke returned really impressive figures of 4 for 14 from six overs. Batting has been proving very difficult for Stephen Scroggie's men so far this season and it got no better here as the hosts' bowlers were on top throughout. Charlie Elder top scored with 26 and Philson and Scroggie both made 22 but not for the first time Creevedonnell fell short of 100 in reply.

Burndennett used four bowlers, Mark Roulston picking up four wickets while Philip Kelly, Stephen Williamson and Stephen McCay split the other six evenly.

The win earns them another home tie in the first round proper when Ballyspallen will provide the opposition whilst Creevedonnell really need to sort things out before their season collapses completely.

Bonds Glen will host Eglinton in the next round after they recorded a fairly comfortable win at home to Killyclooney.

For once it wasn't David Robinson doing the damage but a fine 61 from Colin Hall and 44 from Richard Hepburn helped the Bee Gees post a respectable 170 all out after they took first use.

Derek Lynch returned excellent figures of 6 for 17 from his ten overs and Mark Snodgrass picked up the other four but once again the visitors batting came up short. Ken Colhoun made 20 and James Colhoun 17 not out but no-one else got into double figures and that has been the problem for Killyclooney so far.

They mustered just 83 all out here with the bowling honours claimed by man of the match Colin Hall with 4 for 14, whilst Derek Curry took three and Leslie Curry two wickets in an 87-run win.

Game of the day was at The Nedd where visitors Sion Mills prevailed by just a single run. John Brown once again showed he has lost none of his class with an unbeaten 83 that included 14 fours as the Tyrone side posted 158 all out.

Keith Burns, Declan Canning and Gareth Burns all picked up two wickets and the hosts would have been pretty confident of getting those. Kyle Morrow, who made over 1000 runs for the Ballykelly side last season, was in brilliant touch on Saturday, hitting 9 fours and 9 sixes in a knock of 111.

That left the rest to make 47 between them but some excellent bowling from Ryan O'Neill (4 for 18) and Nigel O'Neill (3 for 28) saw them fall agonisingly short of booking a trip to Coleraine in the next round.
