Special award for Coleraine CC Diversity Project

The Regional Sport Ambassador Award for Coleraine was presented to Stephen McCartney on behalf of the Coleraine Cricket Club diversity project.

This award was in recognition of the North East PEACE III Sport and Leisure programme which builds peace and develops good relations in the North East region.

The cricket club has been involved in a series of training programmes aimed at attracting members from ethnic minority communities, by developing understanding among members and hosting cricket coaching sessions targeting these minority groups.

Coleraine Cricket Club enlisted Bobby Rao MBE to develop a cricket coaching programme and to facilitate cultural awareness training. Following weeks of training, Bobby took the club through a series of cultural awareness workshops to examine the group’s understandings on cultural difference and integration.

With his experience and expertise, Bobby’s delivered good quality and relevant training to the participants

Even though the cricket club has a long history of diversity (attracting many international students at the local university and overseas’s professional players) the club’s participants felt the sessions were ideal for examining their own personal understandings of cultural awareness.

The Regional Awards were part of the North East PEACE III Sport and Leisure programme managed by the University of Ulster Sports Academy.

The aim of the awards programme is to recognise the work which sporting and community groups do to develop an inclusive society and promote understanding of others.
