Teenagers clinch interprovincial series

THE North West clinched the Under 17 interprovincial series following a comprehensive nine wicket win over the NCU at Bready on Sunday.

Chasing 155 for victory, the North West raced to their target in just 30.4 overs, ever mindful of the fact that a quick win would improve their run-rate, used to determine the winners in the event of sides being level of points.

Donemana left hander Ryan Hunter and Glendermott's David Barr put on 152 for the first wicket, before Hunter was dismissed for 90, with just four runs needed for the win.

Barr finished undefeated on 46, with Jack Glenn on 2 not out. Only Lisburn's Callum Atkinson emerges with any credit in the bowling stakes, taking 1-10 from his five overs.

Earlier the NCU had squandered an excellent start given to them by Lisburn's Adam Berry (36) and Carrickfergus batsman Jordan McClurkin (46). The pair had shared an opening partnership of 83, before the introduction of spin brought about a dramatic collapse.

The spinning triumvirate of Scott Campbell (4-34), Jack Glenn (3-7), and Andy McBrine (2-29) reduced their innings to tatters, as they were dismissed for 155 in 41.2 overs.

Holywood's Ross Adair battled manfully for 28, but the remaining eight NCU batsmen could only muster 24 between them, in a pretty poor batting performance.

The selectors will now pick a squad for the European competitions this summer, being played in a slightly different format this year at Under 17 level.

Ireland are scheduled to play a series of three games against both Jersey and Scotland at home in early August, before travelling to The Netherlands for matches between 24-26 August.
