The match was originally scheduled to be played at The Cloughan, but had to be postponed because of the adverse weather conditions two weeks ago, so now Richard Greer’s lads face a 250-mile round trip to County Westmeath.

“It’s a long journey, but the lads are looking forward to taking on a team they are unlikely to ever play again,” said Greer.

Templepatrick eventually got their Senior League Section 1 campaign under way on Saturday, but they returned from Downpatrick empty-handed.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, they were restricted to 180 for 9 in their allotted 50 overs.

Last season’s top scorer, Jay Hunter, again led the way with an impressive 60, followed by Philip Kernaghan with 25 and Chris Busby with 24.

Downpatrick coasted to victory for the loss of five wickets, taken by Rhydian Davies (2 for 18), Kernaghan (1 for 23), Jason McAuley (1 for 46) and Bob Homani (1 for 39).

Chris Busby took two sharp catches at mid-on, while South African, Homani, snapped up a stunning diving one-handed catch at slip.

For this weekend’s clash with Mullingar, Greer will be unable to make the trip, but Arthur Campbell, Jordi Fettis, Ross Bryans and Andy McCrea, who all missed the Downpatrick game, will come in to the reckoning.

Stevie Fettis’s 3rd XI were involved in a thrilling finish in Belfast where Instonians V scraped home by one run in a Junior League fixture.

This weekend’s matches: Saturday, 2nd XI v Civil Service II, home; 3rd XI v Donaghcloney II, away. Sunday, 1st XI v Mullingar, away.
