The weather is the only winner at Sandel Lodge

Coleraine won the toss and opted to bat first at the earlier start time of 12noon.

The two openers, Niall McDonnell and Scott Campbell, came to the crease with the determination to get Coleraine off to a quick start, which they duly did, taking the score to 74 in the 15th over when McDonnell was run out on 34.

Campbell however went on to reach his half century in 61 balls, leading the batting onslaught on the Eglinton bowling with 8 fours and 3 sixes before he fell on 87 to the spin of Craig Averill, with the Coleraine total on 158.

Kyllin Vardhan and David Cooke took the total to 214 before Kyllin (59) was adjudged lbw to Craig’s brother Mark Averill at the end of the 44th over.

Despite Coleraine having wickets in hand and still hoping to add 30 to 40 more runs for the last five overs, with the score on 222 for 5, the innings was cut short by heavy rain after 45.2 overs.

This brought about the decision to take an early tea, but there was a further rain delay after tea, which meant that under Duckworth Lewis reductions, Coleraine would not bat again, and eventually a target score of 206 was set for Eglinton to achieve in the 31 overs remaining to be played.

At quarter past five play restarted, with Eglinton getting off to the worst start, losing Craig Averill, caught off the bowling of Jarred Barnes at midwicket by Paul Douglas off the first ball of their innings following the restart.

At this stage the Coleraine team were hopeful that they could see this game to a successful conclusion.

This was not to be - as luck would have it, after just 10 balls of the innings the rain began, heavier than before and play was stopped again.

By 5.45pm it was clear that the necessary minimum of 20 overs in the second innings would not be reached, so the game was abandoned, to be rearranged and started from scratch on another day.

This leaves Coleraine with two games to be rearranged in their league season. Next Saturday they are due to play Ardmore at Sandel Lodge, starting at 12 noon, as all games do from July onwards in the North West League.

Coleraine have already played and won their away game against Ardmore, who were promoted to the Premier league last season.

The Ardmore team have shown that they are not to be underestimated however, with strong performances and 2 wins in their league games so far and key batsman, Decker Curry topping the NW batting aggregates.

The Second XI may have a rearranged away game next Saturday, as they too have fixtures where the original matches were postponed. This week they had a disappointing loss by four wickets away to Bready Seconds, who are currently second in the Qualifying One league.

The Third XI had a successful weekend, with a win at home on Saturday against Creevedonnell by eight wickets.

In a man of the match winning performance, Simon Hunter, playing his first game of the season, made an unbeaten 21 runs, took two catches and 4 wickets for 18.

The thirds are due to play next Sunday at Sandel Lodge against Bonds Glen Seconds. The Fourths are also in action next Sunday, away to Ballyspallen Seconds.

Meanwhile the draw has taken place for the Quarter Finals of the Faughan Valley T20 competition, following the group stage, where Coleraine 1st XI topped Group A.

In the next round, the Champions, Coleraine will have a home game against Fox Lodge, on a date to be decided. The other quarter finals will be Strabane v Ardmore, Eglinton v Brigade and Donemana v Bready.

Coleraine are also delighted that both Scott Campbell and Rishi Chopra were in the North West Warriors team on Sunday at the T20 interprovincial games at Bready.

In the first game the Warriors were victorious against the hotly favoured Leinster Lightnings, winning by 30 runs in a rain affected game. Rishi Chopra on his debut for the Warriors, bowled his four overs taking three wickets for 31 runs.

In the second game against the Northern Knights the Warriors lost by eight wickets, as the Knights reached the target set, with five balls to spare.

The next Warriors fixtures are next Sunday and Monday, firstly with another T20 game against the Knights, at Comber, followed by the 50 over game the next day.
