Tributes paid to local and Irish cricket stalwart John Caldwell

Tributes have been paid to one of the stalwarts of Irish cricket, John Caldwell, who has died at the age of 75.

The Ballymena man was Chairman of the Irish Cricket Union from 2000-2002, and was President of Cricket Ireland in 2008.

John was also a past Chairman of the Northern Cricket Union and was elected as an Honorary Life Member of the NCU at its 2015 annual general meeting.

He was also a hugely popular lifelong member of his hometown Ballymena Cricket Club, where his standing within Irish cricket was viewed with great pride.

Current Cricket Ireland Chairman Ross McCollum paid tribute to Caldwell saying: “John was a tremendous ambassador and servant for Cricket Ireland who filled a variety of roles with distinction and honour.

“He was Chairman of Cricket Ireland when Adrian Birrell was appointed as head coach, and was the architect of strategic plans which laid the foundation for our success in recent years.

“The sympathies of Cricket Ireland go to his wife Nan and the family circle. May his gentle soul rest in peace.”
