Cricketers ready for the off

THIS weekend sees the start of the cricket season and followers of North West sides can get updates regularly on their mobile phone.Brigade cricketer Trevor Dalzell will be starting twitter like updates throughout all the games this Saturday.

"The idea was to provide quick match updates for local cricket, at all levels, so that cricketers and supporters can keep up to date during the matches and at the end for the results," he said.

"Twitter seemed the ideal tool as it is simple to update, 140 characters maximum, no more than sending a text message and can be updated through mobile phones – no laptop or PC needed. Interest has been very encouraging with 14 out of the 21 NW clubs having signed up to the service to date. I would be hopeful a few more will be added over the coming days."

Joe Doherty, Chairman, North West of Ireland Cricket Union (NWCU), has discussed the concept with other officers of the NWCU and he too is looking forward to the tweets this weekend.

"I've looked at the idea and am delighted to endorse the new service on behalf of NWCU. Not only is it a free service, but it will also give welcome profile to the depth of North West cricket and hopefully provide additional sources of coverage for the mainstream media as well. All good stuff and all very welcome," admitted Doherty.
