Crucial weekend for clubs

THIS weekend's round of league games could be crucial in shaping the nature of promotion and relegation issues, particularly matters at the bottom of the first division.

Sarsfields’ crushing defeat against Crossmaglen last weekend and Mullaghbawn’s move to a third-from-bottom spot has left Killeavey propping up the section but results this weekend could complicate matters even further.

With Clan na Gael losing to Maghery last Saturday night, their match with Killeavey tonight (Thursday) will either put the Francis Street side in a comfortable position or throw relegation issues wide open.

Mullaghbawn’s game against Maghery, which was played last night, and their home tie against Carrickcruppen on Sunday, depending on the results, could leave the bottom of the first division congested.

Things are a lot less complicated at the top of the division. Whitecross, who started the season on a high note are struggling at the moment and have slipped down the table. Maghery are showing a great deal of consistency and are sitting in second place behind Crossmaglen who are determined, this season, to win back their county title.

Meanwhile Clan na Gael’s easy win over Cullyhanna has set them up for a ‘B’ Championship decider against Pearse g on Sunday (4pm) in Maghery. Both teams look strong but the Clans should have enough experience to lift the title.
