Cubs and Juniors show how it’s done at Ballyvally’s indoor event

At Ballyvally Archery Club’s recent indoor tournament, the Cubs and Juniors shot particularly well.

In the girls U10 class, Taylor Barlow shot superbly to win with 440 points while in the U10 boys class, Tom Caughey won with 443 points.

Jake Howard won the U12 boys with a score of 544 - one of the top overall scores of the day - while Helen Houston with 293 just edged out friend and fellow Cub Jenna Ferguson who scored 292.

In the Junior bracket, the girls’ highest score was shot by Sian Heaney with 405 while Matthew Beattie shot 478 to win the boys event, both were shooting the Portsmouth Round.

In the Senior classes, Valerie Sleith had the highest handicap score with 565 while Norman McMath won his section with 413, just a few points ahead of Kevin Heaney on 408.

Among those shooting in the top International round - a FITA 18 - the awards went to Robert Mallon (Barebow 514), Gary Corbett (traditional handicap score 493), Orla O’Connor (ladies barebow 489) and Ruth Gilmour (freestyle ladies 478).

KNOCKOUT

At the end of the shoot, which was held in Banbridge Leisure Centre, a Head to Head was held while the scores were being tabulated.

From the 60 archers, the last two on the line were father and son George and Matthew Nesbitt, who had both fought it through to face each other.

With each having only three arrows, it was a close finish but father George just came out on top to ensure he took the bragging rights at the Sunday dinner table.

CLUB PRESENTATION NIGHT

Ballyvally’s club presentation night will take place this Friday night (30th January) in the Belmont Hotel.

There, all the top awards for 2014 will be revealed, which juniors have obtained the scores for their Archery Achievement badges, who won the indoor and outdoor leagues in 2014, who has had International Success in 2014, who has made the most improvement in 2014 and much more.

All club members and their families are invited.

Beginners are welcome now that the club has restarted for the new year.

Beginners are not required to have their own equipment as there is a large amount of equipment suitable for all ages and genders.
