Cup quarter finals see Higgins, The Coach and the Legion win

B Davis took on M Jamison in the opening frame, which turned out to be an open affair with both players believing they could out-pot the other. Jamison took advantage of a Davis hammer-throw which didn’t pay off, to give the away side a surprising 1-0 lead.

Next up, a below par, N Meara got out of jail against P Wilson. With Kamikaze performances like this can he seriously defend his individual title this month?

The gruesome-twosome of Mick McClean and Coly Wilton pulled off two of the best clearances this season to put the home side in a commanding 3-1 lead. Mick, doubling his sixth red the length of the table to leave a comfortable finish and Wilton clearing from the break.

The contentious decision from Captain Moody to play himself after back-to-back defeats didn’t pay off as Buffer Kerr give him a lesson in potting by cutting his last ball into a blind pocket to leave an easy pot on the black. 3-2

With the pressure back on and a one frame lead to defend, Kevin Smyth stepped up and dismantled R Malcolmson who looked clear favourite from the break. Kevin took his time by playing a careful tactical game before pouncing with a five-ball clearance.

Mick Keetley took on “Rubber” Buchanan. Mick had a plan and he waited until Buchanan opened the game up and he duely cleared the table in emphatic fashion.

The Imperial challenged the victors to the doubles as regardless of the result, they still had their pride to play for.

Unfortunately their luck had not changed as McClean flukes the black to win the first of the doubles!

Last but not least Noel Meara and Gareth McCartan took on I McCreanor and P Barlow.

Meara and McCartan’s over-zealous approach cost them the frame, as a spectator suggested that Gareth’s singing was as good as Noel’s pool, but his pool was as bad as Noel’s singing!

Cullens 2 The Coach 5: The first frame saw Tom vs Tom, with Moore victorious over Bell but Johnny McStay equalised for the home side.

At 1-1 it seemed as though this would go on to be a close affair but when “Mucker” McMullan and Raymie Lyons gave the coach a two frame lead there only looked like one winner. 3-1

Joe Cullen replied for the home team but it only gave them a false sense of hope as the coach’s imperious form continued when they took the next two frames through Barry McKeown & Bill Thompson.

Bus Bar 2 Banbridge Legion 7: Tam Barney’s quest for the double ended in disappointing fashion with defeat to a team that looked far superior. The Legion’s league form has not been very consistent but this result proved the difference in class between the Premier League and Div.1.
