Cup success for City of Derry

CITY of Derry 'B' were the surprise winners in the third round of the Irish Junior Cup when they defeated the much fancied, Belfast Club, Belmont at Lisnagelvin on Saturday.

The home side won the game 98 shots to 76 and leading the way was D Lynch and his rink, winning by 15 shots.

After the first few ends the City of Derry men picked up shots across the green and although the Belfast team staged a comeback, and by the halfway stage had reduced the margin to a few shots.

City of Derry however kept picking up shots and at the end of the game were comfortable winners. They have been drawn at home to Portadown in the next round, on Saturday, June 19.

Rink Scores: B Lyttle 22, N Thompson 20; D Lynch 30, J Carroll 15; L Baldrick 27, A Ross 18; J Kincaid 19, B Heaney 23.

Meanwhile in the Northern Ireland Provincial Bowling Association Progressive Building Society saw City of Derry lose heavily 116-50 at Ballymoney in the Progressive Senior League.

In Progressive Division One, Limavady had an impressive 105-49 success over Ballymoney B and Brooke Park had a 87-67 victory over Ballycastle. In the Progressive Division Two, Limavady B had a narrow 84-83 win over Portrush B, City of Derry B drew 73-73 with Fairhill.

Lisnagelvin lost 92-34 at Portstewart in the Progressive Division Three while Dungiven defeated Culrathain 89-45.

Tomorrow (Thursday) sees the NIPBA Pairs Round Three take centre stage, while on Saturday the Progressive Senor League sees City of Derry visit Brookgreen, next Tuesday, June 15 in the Progressive Division One Cookstown B host Brooke Park, Limavady travel to Ballycastle.

While next Wednesday in Progressive Division Two Limavady B face Kilrea and City of Derry visit Coleraine B and in Progressive Division Three Lisnagelvin face Dunluce B and Dungiven visit Riada.
