Cup time again for the Roesiders

IT is Cup time once again for Limavady United as they once again travel to Carrick Rangers, this time for the Co-Operative Insurance Cup first round. The clubs did meet in the same competition last year in the second round with United coming out on top.

David Patton scored the only goal in the first leg, with goals from Trevor Hutchinson (2), Paul Owens (2), Martin McNutt and Vincent Sweeney in the second leg.

This season however the competition has been altered and the games are now one leg affairs to be played to a finish.

The clubs have already met on the opening day of the season in a game which ended in stalemate.

In the five times that the clubs met last season United won four of those games and the other was a draw.

With another game coming so closely after the first one, United manager Oran Kearney feels his side have a chance to change things.

"Yes it's another game against Carrick and no disrespect to them but I'm fed up playing them," he said.

"We played them so many times last season in various competitions that it would be nice to play someone else.

"No disrespect to Carrick but they were very defensive against us last weekend and had six across the back for most of the game.

"They have added another few players to their squad as well although I expect them to play a similar way.

"We didn't play anywhere near the way we can play in that game and we can only improve on that performance.

"We played better against Ards at the weekend and a similar performance from ourselves should see us through," concluded Kearney.

Going into the game United are without several key players. Michael Doherty and Shane Jennings are definitely out.

Trevor Hutchinson is also a doubt with a calf injury and he is not expected to be fit for this game.

Niall Cooke has been added to the squad and played last weekend. Kevin Roddy is still waiting on International clearance however and it is hoped this will be through this week.
