Curran ladies pipped at the post

CURRAN Ladies have been defeated in the final of the Joyce Kavanagh Trophy for the second time in their four-year history.

Having beaten opponents Dromore, the Larne ladies travelled to Bangor’s Ward Park for the final on Wednesday, July 7 - but they found the current league leaders a vastly different proposition.

On rink one, J Spiers, E Magill, S Greer and skip Valerie Noble after end six were one shot adrift at six shots to five. Dromore’s L Aiken skipped her rink to an 18 to five lead over the next five ends, then played solidly to complete a 22 shot to 10 win.

Margaret Shepherd’s rink of J Gregory, J Moore and L Simms bowled very well to lead nine shots to four after eight ends. Dromore’s C Ogle drew on all her experience over the following six ends to lead 21-11. Curran rallied over the final four ends adding five shots to their tally, going down 22-16. Final score Dromore 44, Curran 26.

Congratulations to the local ladies on their determined effort - maybe next year.

Travelling to reigning champions Newry the following day (Thursday, July 8), Curran suffered another defeat, their third of the season. In a very keenly contested rink, the local ladies J Spiers, E Magill, S Greer and Valerie Noble lost out 17 shots to 16. On rink 2, J Moore, M Hardy, L Simms and M Shepherd were in front by nine shots to seven at end eight.

Thereafter, Newry applied pressure and eased home 28 shots to 12. The final result was Newry 45 (five points), Curran 28 (0 points). Following the holiday break, Curran entertain Castle Park in their quest fir league honours on Thursday, July 29.
