Cycling: Carn Wheelers duo in good form at Nationals

This weekend Ballymoney Cycling Club hosted the Irish National Championships, teams from across the country brought the best and brightest future talents along to do battle on County Antrim’s roads.

Carn Wheelers were represented again by Marc Heaney and Sarah Elder. If either of them were old enough they would be well used to the taste of champagne, such has been the frequency of victories the duo have under their gillets to date.

Marc continued on his great run of form taking joint 7th in the TT, 3rd in the road race and 2nd in the criterium.

These positions left him in 2nd overall, another two national medals to add to an already exponentially expanding collection.

Sarah also did her family and club proud, at the TT she put in a peerless performance that saw her claim gold with a sensational time of 14 minutes 15 seconds.

Later in the road race Sarah was again shining riding well to finish 3rd in a under 12 girls race that was mobbed by the countries best talents.

Six members of Carn Wheelers made the journey to Donegal at the weekend for the Inishowen 100 race.

To put it mildly, this was a ‘wyle’ day for a bike – very windy with severe gusts, and heavy showers.

The scenary in Inishowen was spectacular as usual, lovely beachs and really impressive waves and surf at Malin Head, prompting someone to observe that, “No need for soap if you were to go for a wash at Malin Head today”.

Compliments to the Foyle CC for running this event. The registration was efficient, there were marshalls at all the hazard spots, and on completion, there was a certificate and t-shirt for those who pre-registered.
