Cycling: Cookstown Cycling Team’s Jake Gray claims National Titles

Cookstown Cycling Team were represented by Under 16 rider Jake Gray at the biggest cycling weekend of the year for youth cycling, the Irish National Youth Championships promoted by Ballymoney Cycling Club.

Jake who was undoubtedly cycling in top form, managed to take home all three gold medals in the Time Trial, the Road Race and the Criterium against all the top youth of Ireland.

Meanwhile to the fore in the Time Trial front senior rider John McGlaughlin tried out his luck in the final 10 mile Time Trial promoted by Bann Valley Road Club and on the night John took the honours with a winning time of 23.14 with a comfortable margin of 19 seconds to second placed rider Mark Glendinning of Spires Cycling Club who recorded a time if 23.33.

On the night of the final 5 mile Time Trial also promoted by Bann Valley Road Club the situation was reversed this time Mark Glendinning (Spires) took top spot with a winning time of 11.14 and John narrowly missed out by a mere second, to take second place with a time of 11.15.

Following on to the Ernie Magwood Super Six Time Trial League rounds 4 and 5, CCT had two riders participating in a field of 58 starters.

On the night all the top testers were in attendance and although the weather conditions didn’t look promising there was some astounding times and a lot of personal bests were recorded.

Andrew Reid finished 10th overall in a time of 20.58 and took first placed junior on the night and also recorded a Personal Best Time, as did his team mate John McGlaughlin also recording a personal best time of 21.31 and finishing 22nd overall. A good result all round by these two CCT riders.

On the 5th round 59 riders started with Andrew finishing 11th overall also winning the prize for fastest Junior again on a time of 21.40 and John 12th overall at 21.47 on a slow morning at Woodgreen.

In the West Tyrone Velo Club open 10 mile Time Trial, CCT were once again represented by John McGlaughlin.

John put in another strong performance finishing in 4th position overall with a time of 22.13 and lifting the first unplaced A3 rider prize. The winner of the event was Thomas Martin of Caldwell Cycles with a time of 21.50.

On Thursday evening four members went to the final interclub round hosted by Termon Wheelers/ Caldwell Cycles Omagh & West Tyrone Velo-FCC.

It was a great nights racing with Andrew, John, Jake, Stevie and Darnell Moore from Caldwell cycles starting in scratch all riding hard making the catch with three miles to go.

Good attacking from all the guys with four riders just going clear at the finish. Congratulations to Jake winning, Andy 3rd and John 4th and Stevie finishing in the bunch.

Finally well done to all CCT riders on all their recent achievements which have been very commendable while representing the club at all levels from under 16, Junior and Senior.
