After his recent points double with golds in Holland and Columbia, this time he took top step on the podium alongside team-mate Felix English with victory in the Madison.

It came in Los Angeles on Sunday and adds to the silver the duo had secured in Columbia earlier this month.

They picked up 57 points and were a full 12 clear ahead of silver medalists Denmark with New Zealand claiming third.

“What just happened?” said Downey on Facebook.

“Absolutely stoked to win my third World Cup in a row. Felix English, I’m proud to share this moment with you. There’s an old saying going you can’t beat the Irish.

“And I hope everyone at home enjoys this moment with us. Thanks to my mum and dad for absolutely everything you’ve done for me. It makes me proud to do you proud. Massive thanks to David Muntaner Juaneda and Brian Nugent and to Cycling Ireland for this opportunity. Also to the Emerald Fund and to everyone who supports me at home I can’t thank you enough. I’m on absolute cloud nine.”
