Cycling: East Tyrone’s Harvey Barnes enjoys successful week

In a frenetic week of racing East Tyrone’s highly successful youth riders Harvey Barnes, Jake Gray and Ellie Kelso all emerged with top class victories.

Harvey Barnes took first place in the Under 16 Event at the Ards Criterium with Jake Gray placing third. Barnes helped his club retain the Overall Lead in Round Three of the 5 Inter Club League at Churchtown the following night.

He took a highly impressive win after being in a three man breakaway for most of the race. Ellie Kelso was best placed Girl in the Under 12 Race at Ards with her brother Neil second in the Novice Race and another East Tyrone newcomer Adam Seffen second in the Under 10 Boys Race.

On his third successive night of racing Harvey Barnes placed third in the U16 Race in the Ormeau Park Crit in Belfast with Neil Kelso first Novice and Ellie sixth in the U12 Event.

At Sunday,s Teggart Memorial Race at Banbridge Jake Gray had a good win in the U16 Event with Harvey Barnes unfortunate to puncture in the final 200 metres.

Senior rider Melvin Steele placed in the top twenty in the A3 Event and Neil McGeown also well placed in the A4s.

Ellie Kelso was back off road at the weekend and taking her customary win in the U12 Girls Race in Round Four of the Ulster MTB League at Garvagh Forest.

Neil Kelso was third in the U10 Boys Event with Seniors Leslie Mitchell, Paul Kelso and Keith Warwick all in action in the A4 Support Event.

The East Tyrone Club would like to thank all who helped at the Third Round at Churchtown on Thursday night especially Lissan GAA Club for the use of their premises and the residents at the start and finish areas for their co operation.

It was great to see long serving cycling stalwarts Seamus Devlin (Island Wheelers), Sidney Faulkner and Geordie WIlson out spectating and enjoying the action. There were no power meters and Garmins in their day.

Its back to the Churchtown circuit on Thursday June 26 for Round Four of the JS Cycles Road Race League starting at 7.30pm.

Current Overall Leader is Brian McComb on 49points, Jason Glasgow on 35 and Colin Ramsay with 31.
