CYCLING: Laffin smashes 10-mile record

Team Madigan Cycling Club’s Nigel Laffin set a new record at the annual 10-mile Time Trial in midweek.

Laffin registered a lightning-quick time of 19:58 at the Madigan Pro Bike Centre-sponsored event on the A26 Lisnevenagh Road between Antrim and Ballymena.

He smashed the club record by 12 seconds. The previous best had been held by Gary McKeegan for over 10 years.

Laffin, who is well known within the cycling community for his endurance efforts, completed the 10-mile course with an average speed of over 30 mph. He beat his own personal best by over one minute.

The top three was completed by Jonathan Kyle and Paul Stenson with personal best times of 20.25 and 20.55 respectively.

Special mention must also go to under-16 Rhys McKendry who set a personal best time of 23.06 and on went on to win the Under-16 Ulster 10 mile TT championship in Toome on Sunday, August 10.
