CYCLING: North West CC's Mullan grabs Phoenix GP victory

A strong field of 80 riders, including four other NWCC riders took to the 40-mile course in the A4 race.

All riders worked hard through the 40 miles but as expected it came down to a bunch sprint and Mullan, fresh from a win in Portstewart last week, carried on his fine form to bring the money and trophy back to Foreglen.

Timothy Burns of North Down came in second with Sean Mullan of Clogher Valley Wheelers in third.

It was also a good day as well for McCartney on his race debut as he finished in the main pack with Nigel Bradley taking sixth place to build on his excellent off season.

The Main A race was won by a tyre’s width by Eoin Morton of UCD from Adam Armstrong of Wheelworx ASEA. However a complaint has been lodged so the host club are awaiting confirmation of this result. Craig Rea (Phoenix CC) got another fine result by taking third with Ali Macaulay (Wheelworx-ASEA) in fourth place. Christopher McGlinchey (ChainReaction) was fifth ahead of Jody Wright (Phoenix CC).

Meanwhile, North West C.C. have teamed up with local charity, Young Parkinson’s, to promote a charity cycle on Saturday, March 12th.

Sign on is at Foreglen GAA Clubhouse from 8.30am and the cycle departs at 9.30am. There’s something for everyone with both a 22 mile route and 54 mile route planned with support vehicles covering both routes.

A donation of £10 per person is requested with all proceeds going to Young Parkinsons. Refreshments after in the clubhouse. Check out the club website for more details .
