Dalriada miss out on Schools’ Cup semi

Dalriada 1st XI hockey team set out to Civil Service pitches, Belfast on January 31 to play a very strong Sullivan Upper team in the quarter final of the Schools’ Cup.

Dalriada began with high spirits with Lynn Macaulay distributing the ball well around the pitch where forwards Claire Finnerty and Emma Chestnutt made great runs in an attempt to break through their strong defence.

However, Dalriada defenders, Diane Ramsey and Emma Johnston were under great pressure from Sullivan forwards but did well to clear the circle.

Unfortunately Dalriada’s goal keeper Laura Henry couldn’t prevent Sullivan scoring from penalty corners, leaving half time with a score of 3-0 to Sullivan.

After an intense team talk from their coaches, Dalriada was determined to come back fighting with midfielders Sophie Sterne and Sophia Rodgers making fabulous tackles.

Furthermore Rachael Kennedy and Eva Carson produced great forward play along with Sara Jamison but were still unlucky to score in the penalty corners against Sullivan.

Dalriada’s centre back, Tara McConaghie, did a great job in making crucial tackles in the circle along with left back Rachel Taggart who marked her player well. Nevertheless Dalriada conceded another two goals in the second half, finishing the game with a loss.

The team would like to thank their coaches Mrs Cleland, Ms Wharry and Nicki Parke who gave them great encouragement and the supporters who travelled some distance to give much need backing. Dalriada would like to wish Sullivan Upper all the best in their quest for the Schools’ cup.

GOLF NEWS

Ballycastle’s Winter League suffered yet another cancellation last weekend.

Having experienced snow over the past few weekends this time it was the wind that did the damage.

Gale force winds on Saturday meant the course was virtually unplayable and in some places dangerous so no competition could be held.

A Stableford competition was however held on Sunday with Michael Dallat Jnr. coming out tops in Division 1 with 30 points.

The 2 handicapper was 3 under par for the 13 holes ,carding no less than 5 birdies en route.His only dropped shots were at the 2 Par 3s- 10th & 17th- .

Gerard Dowds playing off 12 finished in 2nd place with 28 points.The Dunloy man got off to a slow start but rallied towards the end of his round to secure 2nd spot.Kevin Traynor ,with 28 points,claimed 1st spot in Division 2.

Playing off 15 he produced a very steady back 9 to edge out Paul Brogan by a point.Paul was putting together a very compact round but “slip ups” at the 12th and 18th proved costly to him in the end.
