Dan takes the top spot on last three holes in weekly sweep

THE Wednesday Sweep competition last week was another success story.

Good and dry weather prevailed and this allowed quite a few to avail of this competitive midweek facility. Scoring was notably better than in previous weeks. On this occasion nineteen golfers posted scores of 37 points or better in this qualifying competition. Indeed the top five net winners all attained totals in the forty point bracket.

There were three returns of 42 points on the day and they contended for the main prize. In the end thanks to a superior back three score it was Dan Dempsey who came out on top. This fifteen handicapper registered 20 and 22 points over the respective nines. A birdie at the third and pars at holes two and nine were his noteworthy scores on the outward nine. On the homeward journey he acquired vital pars at holes ten, twelve, thirteen, sixteen and eighteen. With eight points on the last three holes he just slipped into first place.

Paul Rippon, a prolific winner in recent times, also scored 20 and 22 points over the nines. On the day this nineteen handicapper was best served by a string of pars at holes one, two, six, ten, fourteen and eighteen. His only disappointing hole was the third where he ran up a double bogey. This tidy play earned him some reduction in his handicap.

Another high handicapper was third with his haul of 42 points. The player in question was Derek Woods. This twenty-seven handicapper had an exciting 23 points after nine holes. Par figures at holes three, five, eight and nine paved the way for this fruitful opening nine. He still played soundly on the homeward nine to gather a tally of 19 points. Pars at holes ten, twelve, thirteen and eighteen were his keynote holes. A failure to register any points on hole number seventeen proved a costly exercise.

Fergie Lennon managed the only return of 41 points and this helped him attain fourth spot. This sixteen handicapper had a consistent 20 and 21 points on either side of the course. A birdie at the sixth and pars at holes three and eight were his early successes. He had five net pars on the inward nine. However pars at holes ten, eleven, thirteen and seventeen were his most pleasing efforts.

Twenty-six handicapper Gerry Crossey won fifth place with a fighting effort of 40 points. Gerry achieved 19 and 21 points on each nine to reap this success. Birdies at the eighth and thirteenth holes and a par on the sixteenth were the clear highlights of his winning round.

Scratch golfer Gary Clarke took the gross honours over the back nine. Gary birdied holes one and eight on the opening nine but bogeys on the second, seventh and ninth holes took their toll. Pars were his lot on the other four holes. Nine pars were made on the inward nine. With 17 and 18 gross points on the nines he received the gross award. One handicapper James Horan also managed a total of 35 gross points in the competition.
