Darragh wins final summer competition of year at Raceview

THE final competition of the summer season at Ballymena Golf Club saw Paul Darragh register a win which set the seal on a very successful season for him.

The seven-handicapper played the opening nine holes in three over and the closing nine were covered in one under.

That opening nine was made up of six pars with dropped shots at the second, fifth and sixth, whereas the closing nine contained six pars plus a dropped shot at 14. Birdies were scored on the 16th and 18th for a nett 63.

The runner-up prize was taken by Wesley Smyth (16) who returned a nett 64 and on a better second nine from Richard McCrea and Sammy Balmer.

Smyth’s opening nine was quite a mixture where he parred the three par threes but against that, he registered three double bogeys, with two of them on the par fives.

Being nine over, Wesley really got his game together on the homeward run where he had four pars plus a birdie on the 17th to be home in three over and a nett score of 64.

Third place went to McCrea (17) also with a nett 64 and on a better second nine score from Balmer.

McCrea’s opening nine came via four bogeys, a double bogey on the sixth plus four pars, while the closing nine contained three pars, five single bogeys and a double bogey on the 11th.

Balmer (22) was eight over on the front nine which contained double bogeys on the third and sixth and a back nine of 10 over contained two pars, four single bogeys plus double bogeys on the 11th, 12th and 16th.

Bruce McKenzie (13) picked up the fifth nett prize with a score of 65 having been six over on the first nine and four over on the second nine.

Bruce had four bogeys plus a double bogey on the first six holes and he added four pars.

The back nine was somewhat steadier where he had five pars plus a dropped shot on the 10th, 12th, 13th and 15th.

The final nett prize went to Cormac McQuillan (11) with a score of 66 which came from seven pars, 10 single bogeys plus a birdie on the 13th.

The best gross card was returned by John Robinson (4) who played the course in three over.

A front nine of two pars, two bogeys, two double bogeys and three birdies was added to on the back nine with six fours plus a trio of threes for level par and three over gross.
