David returns top score in club’s senior stableford

THE club hosted its sixth Senior Open Stableford competition of the year on the last monday in June.

Between ladies and gents there were just short of 60 entries.

In the gents competition a good score was difficult to obtain and only six golfers had returns of 37 points or better.

The top score of 40 points earned David Johnston the principal monthly prize. This twelve handicapper had a steady opening nine that included four pars and five bogeys. Holes one, three, six and eight were his par returns. A relatively similar scoring pattern emerged on the back nine. Pars were notched on holes twelve, thirteen, sixteen and seventeen. A birdie on the eighteenth was the defining moment and it ensured him the main prize.

A score of 39 points provided Laurence McGrady with the runners-up slot. This six handicapper had respectable scores on both sides of the course. On the outward nine he had seven pars to go alongside bogeys on holes one and six. On the inward stretch he managed six further pars. On holes eleven and thirteen he incurred bogeys but he recorded a birdie on the fourteenth. This tidy play earned him second spot.

The last net prize went to Paul Carlin. This twenty four handicapper took the spoils with a tally of 38 points. A birdie at the seventeenth and pars at holes eight and twelve were his crucial returns. However four double bogeys and a couple of no-returns deprived him of a higher placing.

Joe Dowey took the gross award with 31 gross points. This six handicapper was through nine with six pars and three bogeys. On the back nine he birdied the tenth and eighteenth holes. In between he landed critical pars at holes twelve, thirteen and sixteen. On the day this sufficed to secure him the gross honours.

The last golfer with 37 points was visitor M G Gallagher.

The twos’ pool was useful as only John McEvoy, Ian Harrison and Paul Carlin pencilled in twos.

A total of 35 points earned Rosemary Callender the ladies prize on the day.
