David's game clicks into shape as Colin hits an ace at the eighth

David Mawhinney (16) is enjoying a golfing year to remember.

He won the May Bank Holiday Medal back in May, of course. And now he has won the latest Thursday Open.

David had a most interesting round of golf last Thursday. He was 10 over par after nine holes and he must have been thinking, “I could finish last in this thing”. But then, as if by magic, his game clicked into shape.

He played the second nine in two over par gross and that gave him a winning score of 39 points.

John Grattan (14) was second, also with 39 points. John was never going to beat David on countback, especially after taking a triple bogey six at the short 12th hole.

Ashton Clydesdale (22) was third with 38 points.

Young Jamie Thompson (6) won the best gross prize with a 74.

There was no doubt as to who hit the shot of the day though. That honour went to Colin Wilton who struck a perfect iron at the eighth hole and the ball finished in the hole for an ace. Congratulations!
