“As well as celebrating their tremendous success, I saw the need for improved facilities and new equipment at the club. In common with many sports across the north, rowing was keen to use the boost of the Olympic Games to build a legacy.

“Then, I was able to meet members of all ages and hear about the club’s needs as it continues to nurture and develop rowers at all levels.

“Today, I am pleased to return to see the new equipment that was purchased with DCAL money.

“I trust this will have a positive impact on the club’s development and increased participation through their outreach programme.

“I hope this funding will inspire the Olympians of tomorrow, as well as continuing to make the sport accessible to people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.”

On meeting one of the more famous members of Bann Rowing Club, the Minister said: “It is a pleasure to once again meet Peter Chambers, an athlete who continues to be an inspiration not only to rowers but to all sportspeople.

“He is a powerful advocate for the sport of rowing, as well as Bann Rowing Club and the wider community.

“I also want to congratulate Peter, along with his brother Richard, on the recent bronze medal in the men’s double scull event at the 2013 World rowing championships.”

The Minister also met with representatives of Coleraine Borough Council to hear of their proposals to develop sporting facilities in the Borough.
